Start early with research to make sure that you meet the requirements, especially if you are interested in attending a highly competitive college or a military academy.
Have an academic plan and consult with the high school counselor, so you can stay on track in spite of transitions.
Regardless of where you live, focus on finding a college or university that fits your needs and wants.
Come up with a list of possible choices that fit your interests.
If your list includes competitive or “reach” colleges, make sure to include several colleges where you have a very good chance of getting admitted.
Begin your search online with the college websites; you can “register” online as a
prospective applicant. The colleges will begin to email or mail information after that. Keep in mind that colleges may also keep a record of demonstrated interest.
Visit college fairs that are being held in your area.
If possible, visit college campuses and talk with current students so you can compare
different colleges. (Some high schools will allow a certain number of excused absences so that you can visit colleges. Check local policies for information on the process.)
Many colleges have virtual tours so that you can see live views of the campus.
Most colleges are equipped with offices and services that address students with disability
accessibility, accommodation, and assistive technology for a diverse range of needs.
If you are stationed overseas, you may want to consider an accredited university outside the Continental United States overseas (OCONUS) that offers classes in English and accepts transferred benefits under Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Make sure that you find out if the colleges take the GI Bill, and research the contact information of the person who handles veterans benefits.
Please review your social media accounts. Check anything that might be public or where you have been tagged. College admission officers, potential employers, and scholarship review committees may conduct an internet search as part of their decision process.
